Take the Virtual Tour

The Lesbian Herstory Archives is a magical place—part library, part museum, a community gathering space- and it houses the world’s largest collection of materials by and about lesbians and their communities.

Most people think of “archives” as a dreary, dusty and dark place filled with boxes of papers of interest only to a small group of academic researchers and writers. Erase that image from your mind.

We have both print and non-print materials, such as books, unpublished papers, conference proceedings, newsletters, photographs, slides, periodicals, audio-tapes, CDs, DVDS, videos, films, subject and organizational files, reference tools, artwork, calendars, banners, manuscripts, music, clothing, buttons and other materials about lesbians and lesbian lives in the U.S. and in other countries. With minor exceptions, all of the material has been donated to the Archives.

Special Collections

Special Collections are the kinds of collections most people think of when they think of an archive. They contain personal papers of individuals or organizational papers. The Archives’ Special Collections do not only reflect the lives of “famous” lesbians. We seek to preserve and document the lives of all lesbians and our Special Collections reflect this principle.

Pratt SILS

In 2008 we began a project to digitize our spoken word tapes. Prof. Anthony Cocciolo and students in the digitization course he teaches at the Pratt School of Information and Library Sciences (Pratt SILS) began digitizing some of our tapes and creating a website so we could make these interviews available to the public.

DCYMNY Collection

The Lesbian Herstory Archives is home to the largest collection of materials about lesbians in the world. Our photo collection, which we are now starting to digitize, reflects the growth of the Archives since 1974. Much of the materials came to us from women who simply wanted their images saved and their lives remembered. The collection holds snapshots, professional photography, found images and everything in between.

Newsletters

Newsletters are a wonderful source for information. They are published from within the community, and provide news, updates, information and all kinds of resources. Some container content

About The Archives http://emmaschaefer.info/about/ Tue, 20 Nov 2018 16:45:53 +0000 http://lha.local/?page_id=14

Statement of Purpose

The Lesbian Herstory Archives exists to gather, preserve and provide access to records of Lesbian lives and activities. The process of collecting this material also serves to uncover and document our Herstory previously denied to us by patriarchal historians in the interests of the culture that they served. The existence of the Archives will thus enable current and future generations to analyze and reevaluate the Lesbian experience.

We encourage lesbians to record their experiences and to donate to the Archives any materials that are relevant to their lives: we collect books, magazines, journals, news clippings (from established, Feminist and Lesbian media), bibliographies, photos, herstorical information, t-shirts, tapes, films, diaries, oral herstories, poetry and prose, biographies, autobiographies, notices of events, posters, graphics, zines, unpublished papers, organizational records and other memorabilia and references to our lives.

The existence of these Archives will enable us to formulate our living Herstory and to create an Archive representing a diverse range of Lesbian lives and cultures.

Principles

The Lesbian Herstory Educational Foundation, Inc., informally known as the Lesbian Herstory Archives, is a grassroots, community-based, not-for-profit institution containing the largest and longest-lived collection of Lesbian material in the world, open to the public. It was founded in 1974 by Lesbian women and housed in an Upper West Side apartment in Manhattan. In 1991, the collection moved into its own home, a limestone building in Park Slope, Brooklyn. From its inception the Archives has been guided by a set of principles reflecting a commitment to living history and to housing the present along with the past. The core values of the principles remain today.

What follows are the principles as expressed by the coordinators group in Fall 2018:

  • The Archives collects material by and about all Lesbians, acknowledging changing concepts of Lesbian identities. All expressions of Lesbian identities, desires and practices are important, welcomed and included. The goal is to document the widest range of Lesbian experience from all geographic, cultural, political and economic backgrounds and historical contexts, not just the lives of the famous or the published.
  • The Archives welcomes all to come visit, explore the collection and do research. No fee for this use is charged. Gender identity, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, religion or dis/ability will never be barriers for use of the Archives collection.
  • The Archives shall be involved in the political struggles of all Lesbians.
  • The Archives is an all-volunteer organization, collectively run, with the coordinators making policy decisions by consensus.
  • Archival skills are taught one generation of Lesbians to another, breaking the elitism of traditional archives.
  • The Archives is funded by individual Lesbians, LGBT and feminist organizations, allies and nongovernmental funding sources.
  • The Archives is and will remain an independent entity housed in its own building in the community, not on an academic campus.
  • The Archives will never be sold, nor will its contents ever be divided.
  • The Archives is committed to the political struggles of all Lesbians and their communities.
  • The Archives is dedicated to building inter-generational bridges among Lesbian communities to deepen the understanding of what Lesbian experiences mean in different contexts and in different historical periods.

A Brief History

In 1972, a group of women and men including Joan Nestle, mostly gay, who worked or had been educated in the City University of New York and had participated in the liberation movements of the l960s, founded the Gay Academic Union (GAU). Dedicated to representing the concerns of lesbian and gay students, teachers, and workers, GAU also launched projects to ensure gay inclusion in course content. At the first conference of the organization, a bomb threat emptied the auditorium, but the conference continued.

As was common in the early 1970s, after a year of working together, several of the women decided they needed a separate meeting space to discuss sexism in the organization, among other things. Two consciousness- raising groups were formed and one of them, which included Joan Nestle and Deborah Edel, became the founding site of the Lesbian Herstory Archives. At one meeting in 1974, Julia Stanley and Joan Nestle, who had come out before the Gay Liberation Movement, talked about the precariousness of lesbian culture and how so much of our past culture was seen only through patriarchal eyes. Deborah Edel, Sahli Cavallaro and Pamela Oline, with histories ranging from lesbian-feminism to political lesbianism, joined in and, thus, a new concept was born – a grassroots Lesbian archives.

Later in 1974, a larger group of women started meeting on a regular basis to work out the deeper vision of this undertaking. One of the first tasks the group undertook was to send off a news release to all of the then existing lesbian, feminist and gay publications announcing the groundbreaking undertaking. This was a testing of the waters, to see if the community shared in our vision. The answer was "yes", and in the next year, 1975, LHA published its first free newsletter.

In the same year, the Archives found its home for the next 15 years in Joan Nestle's Upper West Side Manhattan apartment on 92nd St. Deborah Edel and Joan shared these years with the Archives in this home. And so did thousands of volunteers and visitors. Deb and Joan agreed that the first ten years of the Archives would be to build the trust of the communities it was serving. They were determined to keep all of the services of the Archives free, to not seek government funding, and to build grassroots support for the project. To accomplish this, Deb and Joan had carried around early journal issues, photographs, letters, and so on, in shopping bags, speaking to whomever invited them. The venues ranged from living rooms where all present were sworn to secrecy, to women's festivals, gay church and synagogue gatherings, classrooms and bars.

By the late 1970s, to save wear and tear on the more fragile artifacts, they created the Archives' slide show. The slide show meant they could demonstrate the history of the Archives and raise issues about the challenges facing a Lesbian Archives and Lesbian history work in general, while making appeals for more materials. The main point of the slide show was to turn shame into a sense of cherished history, to change the meaning of history to include every woman who had the courage to touch another woman, whether for a night or a lifetime. "To change deprivation into cultural plentitude" as Joan said in hundreds of tours she gave in the apartment of the overflowing collection. A version of the slideshow still exists today, custom fitted to whomever is showing it.

In 1978, Judith Schwarz, a pioneering grassroots Lesbian historian, joined the collective, bringing with her all her skills in information organizing. Georgia Brooks, a tireless activist in the New Jersey and New York communities, also joined. Georgia launched the first Black Lesbian Studies group at the Archives, which held its meetings around the famous French peasant dining room table that we bought for $30 on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn in 1973. It is now back in Brooklyn in our permanent home.

One other person closely connected with the Archives until her death was Mabel Hampton, (1902-1986), a woman who had lived her long life in the African-American Lesbian community. Mabel donated her extensive collection of 1950s lesbian paperbacks and often came to volunteer nights. From the earliest days of the Archives, one night a week was devoted to volunteers working with the collection -groups of very different women spread out over the whole apartment filing, sorting, cataloguing, and opening mail. Many women came to volunteer nights just to hear Mabel tell her tales of drag balls in Harlem and her version of the wild parties of the Harlem Renaissance.

In the mid-1980s when we realized we needed to find a larger home for the Archives and to spread the responsibility for the now huge collection, we created a Coordinating Committee that spearheaded a concerted fundraising drive so we could purchase a building for the collection. We purchased our new home, in Park Slope, Brooklyn, in 1992 and officially opened it in June 1993. The bank was dubious about taking a risk on our non-hierarchical collective with no guaranteed source of income, but we raised the money to pay back the bank in record time. That trust we had talked about building in 1974 was there when we - all of us -needed it. Thank you.

On this web site you will see the ever-growing face of the archives, the work of tireless coordinators and volunteers who make all possible, and of the continuing donations, both financial and material, of our communities. The Archives coordinators hold this building and its contents in trust for our communities and we take our responsibility seriously.

We invite you to use us, to visit us in whatever way you can. We hope in the future to make the contents of our collections accessible on the Internet. But someday, if you can, make your way to the old table in Brooklyn around which so many of us have dreamed and planned and acted, refusing the ignorances of our times.

Calling all lesbians who have a passion for our herstory, insatiable curiosity, some free time, and like spending time with other dykes…

Volunteer

You can volunteer anytime we’re open. Check our monthly calendar for specific open time and days.

Since its beginning, the Archives has always been completely managed and staffed by volunteers from the lesbian community. We have never had any paid staff and have relied solely on volunteers to process all materials, raise all necessary funds, and literally keep the doors open.

One of our principles is that the women doing the work of the Archives should make decisions about the Archives. To that end, a Coordinating Committee manages the Archives. As the Archives grew from its start in the back room of an Upper West Side Manhattan apartment to its present location in a townhouse in Park Slope, Brooklyn, the concept of the three original coordinators grew to a larger core group of coordinators. Presently there are about ten women who form the Coordinating Committee.

Women on the Coordinating Committee have each taken on a specific area of responsibility to ensure that the Archives continues to run as smoothly as possible. Coordinators meet every three weeks to discuss and make decisions on policy, planning, fundraising, arranging special events, fulfilling speaking requests, and producing our newsletter. Several other past coordinators continue in various degrees to contribute their time and skills from their relocations around the country and the world. Any volunteer who has been participating in the Archives long enough to be familiar with its collections and policies, and who is willing to take responsibility for its functioning and continuation, can join the Coordinating Committee.

Volunteers and interns, as well as coordinators, staff the Archives several days and evenings each week, keeping the Archives open for researchers and visitors. We all do the day to day work of keeping the Archives functioning: filing, cataloging, clipping newspaper articles and magazines, responding to research requests and reference questions, arranging and giving tours, processing special collections, and the myriad of other tasks that arise from day to day. And, any volunteer, at any time, may take on a responsibility or special project that interests them. This can range from filing to gardening or repair work. It can be a one-day project or one that goes on for months.

Our calendar will not only show the times we are open (when you can volunteer), but it also shows our special workdays each month- days when we concentrate on specific projects. For instance, the Book Project Workday met once per month for over five years. With a dedicated core group of seven women plus additional women who participated on an occasional basis, we processed and catalogued the Archives’ 11,000 books. We now have a Special Collections workday with the goal of completely processing all of our Special Collections and creating finding aids for all of them as well. We also have a General Workday during which we take on specific short-term projects, for e.g. reorganizing and storing our Special Collections in addition to general filing and data entry. You can call us for more information at 718-768-3953. We’ll get back to you to as soon as possible and discuss how you can contribute to the Archives’ ongoing work.

We always need and welcome new women to our growing group of Archives’ volunteers. The odds are that you will have an enjoyable time working with other lesbians on interesting projects such as reviewing lesbian videos, organizing photos, as well as getting to know first hand the various collections in the Archives.

Internships

The Archives' structure/process combines individual autonomy with group goals and consensus decision-making. We seek to match interns with their interest areas, based on a wide variety of options. However, volunteers (including coordinators) staff the Archives, answer and return phone calls, and do the general work of keeping the Archives functioning on a day-to-day basis, and we expect interns to do the same.

Other ongoing work includes: identifying and assigning items to proper subject files and special collections, reorganizing collections for proper preservation, creating signage or updating collection information and labels, answering research questions received by mail and phone, cataloguing video and audio tapes, book collection maintenance and development, three-dimensional object collection processing and maintenance, research in preparation for exhibits, giving tours of the collections to international and domestic visitors, gardening, carpentry, building maintenance etc. In addition to the above, interns sometimes initiate their own projects. Examples of intern-generated projects have included: organization of the graphics flat files, creation of a guide to the special collections, the creation of an exhibit of butch-femme identity exhibit (shown at LHA and in Greenwich Village storefront windows) and cataloguing and indexing of the Lesbian History edition of Frontiers.

We believe that internships should be mutually beneficial.

Time Commitment

Although there is no limit to how long a woman may intern, we ask for a commitment of at least 10 hours per week for no less than eight weeks (or more hours per week for a shorter period of time). In addition, interns are expected to attend coordinator meetings (two hours every third week).

Days and hours of interning are arranged in accordance with the needs of both the intern and LHA. The Archives strives to keep its doors open a maximum number of hours/days a week; interns can arrange schedules for both days and evenings, during the week and on weekends.

How To Apply

An interested intern is advised to send a cover letter describing her familiarity with the Archives, her background, areas of interest and proposed internship period. A phone interview, correspondence or a visit to the Archives is conducted in order to determine whether an internship is of mutual interest. Please note: As The Archives is an all-volunteer run organization- it can neither pay interns nor house them. When possible, LHA volunteers may assist in finding appropriate short-term housing options for interns.

Skills

Interns should have a personal interest in and commitment to the Archives' mission. Ease in working with a diverse public is an asset. No specific coursework or academic background is required. An interest in Lesbian Studies, Women's Studies, and/or Lesbian/Gay issues is a strength, as is exposure to women's communities and experience in working in a group environment with consensus.

Supervision/Advising

Archives coordinators include professors, librarians, teachers, writers, community cultural workers, social workers, filmmakers, graduate students, artists, craftswomen, journalists, and translators. An appropriate match between a coordinator and an intern will be established to provide both orientation and ongoing supervision. Interns have direct contact with Archives coordinators and volunteers. Beyond this, interns are expected to be comfortable with working autonomously. Evaluation forms and collaboration with an intern advisor from an academic institution may be arranged.

Mission

Purpose

From the beginning the Archives' founders developed a statement of purpose and a set of principles to guide the development of the collection. We adhere to these proposes and principles today.

Principles

Many of our principles are a radical departure from conventional archival practices. They are inclusive and non-institutional and reveal our commitment to living history.

History

jin 1972, a group of women and men founded the Gay Academic Union. After a year of working together several of the women decided they needed a separate meeting space to discuss sexism in the organization

Subject Files http://emmaschaefer.info/collections/subject-files/ Tue, 04 Dec 2018 01:48:24 +0000 http://lha.local/?page_id=261

Our 1,569 fascinating Subject Files fill the drawers of four, five drawer horizontal file cabinets plus overflow boxes. Think of these files as “Lesbians and…”. The first file is “Abortion” and the last is “Youth”. In between are such topics as “African -Ancestral Lesbians”, “Bars”, “Health Care”, “Marriage”, “Music Festivals”, “Publishers”, “Religion”, “Theatre”, and “Violence”. We have a complete listing of these files with cross-referencing plus a thesaurus to help you locate information related to your interest.

Each file contains an assortment of papers – flyers, legal briefs, photocopies of newspaper articles, copies of the table of contents of books, event programs, and so on. When a particular topic, for e.g. Theatre” has a large number of file folders which are full to the brim, we move the overflow to large boxes stored upstairs. Subject files give you a good introduction to, and overview of a topic and point you towards other parts of the Archives’ collections if you want more depth.

We worked with Primary Source Microfilms, a subsidiary of Thompson Gale, on a project in which they microfilmed all of our subject files. We have a copy of the set of 175 microfilm reels as well as a digitized version that we will be able to use to create exhibits on our website. In addition, the set of 175 reels is now available for purchase and we will receive royalties for each set that is sold.

Below, as a sample, we have one folder available free for download in PDF format:žAfrican Ancestral Lesbians: History. We hope to add more files to this website in the future.

Books & Monographs http://emmaschaefer.info/collections/books-monographs/ Tue, 04 Dec 2018 01:48:59 +0000 http://lha.local/?page_id=263

Our 11,000 books, by and/or about lesbians, date from the 19th century to the present. They have all been catalogued and can be searched on the computer by author, title, publisher, date and keywords. In addition to the books in the Archives, we keep one exact duplicate and one of every different duplicate (different cover, preface, edition) stored off site.

The books are divided into several categories, the largest being fiction/biography/autobiography and literary criticism. These books, as well as the mysteries, science fiction, children’s, young adult, poetry and humor books (which are shelved separately) are organized differently from most libraries. First, all books pertaining to an author, such as biographies and literary criticism, are shelved along with her own work. This makes it much easier to do research. Second, books are shelved by the first name of the author, a reflection of the Archives’ founding during the lesbian-feminist 1970s. We have maintained this order since it is, in itself, an artifact reflecting part of our communities’ herstory.

We also have separate sections for poetry anthologies and prose anthologies, shelved alphabetically by the title, as are the pulp novels, which date from the 1930’s to the present. We call these “survival literature” since they were often the only depictions of lesbian life and sex available from the 1930s to the 1960s. In addition to books, the theatre, film and video categories contain original scripts, many of which are unpublished.

Our non-fiction collection is divided into several categories as well. You’ll find sections on Herstory/History (including oral histories); Lesbian-Feminism and Lesbian Theory; Health; Social Science (which includes politics, community studies, psychology, economics, anthropology, sociology); Culture; Sports; Sexuality (including “our enemies”); Religion/Spirituality; and Art/Photography. These are shelved alphabetically by title within each category except for Art/Photography books, which are shelved by the first name of the artist/photographer.

The reference collection also contains several categories: bibliographies, indexes, directories, encyclopedias, catalogs, guides, and other major reference works on lesbian/gay history. This is where we keep our own in-house guides to the collection, with printouts of our subject file headings, special collections, organizations, books, unpublished papers, T-shirts, and videos.

…many of our collections are catalogued in databases at our building. one of our plans for the future is to make those databases available online…

We also have what we call our International Collection, books in languages other than English. Some are books originally published in English and then translated into other languages; others are books originally published in languages other than English.

Finally, we have two special book collections that are actually historical artifacts. There is what we call The Red Dot Collection (there’s one on the spine of each volume). This collection was acquired from the New York Chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis. It had been located in their resource room and collected from their inception in 1960 until 1971, when the chapter was disbanded. Jane Kogan handled the transferal of this book collection to Lesbian Herstory Archives. While we have most of these books in our own collection we keep them together (and they are catalogued separately on our database) because they represent what an early lesbian organization felt should be available to its members.

We also have a separate collection of books from the Marge MacDonald Special Collection. Again, our own collection has most of these books. We keep them together because Marge MacDonald bequeathed these to us in her will, along with her journals and other papers. Because she had filed those legal papers we were able to save her collection from being destroyed by her family. On tours of the Archives, we use this collection as a way to remind our visitors that every lesbian life is of value. We urge you to find a place, either the Lesbian Herstory Archives or elsewhere, that will honor your life, and to begin to donate your personal papers and materials early in your life, adding to them over the years. By doing this, and also making a legal bequest in your will, you life story will be safe and available so the next generation of lesbians will have access to their herstory.

Audio-Visual Collection http://emmaschaefer.info/collections/audio-visual-collection/ Tue, 04 Dec 2018 01:49:24 +0000 http://lha.local/?page_id=265

The Archives houses several different types of audio-visual materials. Our Music Collection contains LPs, CDs, and cassette tapes, most of which have been catalogued and can be searched by computer. In addition, we have a large collection of Spoken Word cassette tapes and CDs of lesbian and feminist radio shows, readings, conferences, interviews and oral histories.

Our Video collection contains approximately 600 videotapes. Some are home movies, others document community events such as dyke marches, the Irish Lesbian and Gay Organization St. Patrick’s Day protests, pride marches, conferences and so on. We also have videos of TV programs, documentaries, shorts and feature films. Although we do have a complete list of our holdings, the collection is only partially catalogued on the computer. It will be completed shortly.

We also have two special collections of video material. The first is the collection of the L.O.V.E. Tapes (Lesbians Organized for Video Experience) from the early 1970s. L.O.V. E. was an early video collective that documented various lesbian events, including demonstrations by Lesbian Feminist Liberation. The second is a special collection from DYKE TV that contains all of the unedited videotape, mostly shot from 1992 until 1999. These tapes cover a vast range of topics and they came with a complete listing so it’s easy to find those you might want to view.

We keep the originals of most films and videos stored off–site in a climate controlled storage archive in order to preserve them as long as possible. We keep dubs of these at the Archives for viewing purposes. As another means of preserving these tapes we are now beginning a project to digitize them.

...we have
a large collection
of Spoken Word
cassette tapes
and CDs...

Our Photography Collection contains approximately 12,000 printed photographs, located in files, binders and albums. In addition, we have a collection of slides, which have been placed into binders. The Photo File is arranged alphabetically, either by the first name of the photographer or the subject, and we have a computer listing of the files in it. The photo albums and binders usually contain the work of a specific photographer or the personal photos documenting the people and events in a particular lesbian’s life. In addition some of the binders hold slides of artists’ work. Many of the photographic images we have can be used for publication or display; either we have permission to allow this or we can get in touch with the photographer so you can make the necessary arrangements. If you are looking for photographs please leave at least one month in order for us to get permissions if necessary.

The Graphic/Poster Collection is stored in two large flat files plus several large acid free boxes. The flat files are arranged in broad categories, such as “Political Events, Calls for Actions, Marches, Rallies” and “Lesbian (and Gay) Pride Events, Awareness Weeks, Conferences”, “Literary Events, Readings, Bookstores”, and so on. The boxes usually hold the work of one artist or atelier, such as the Women’s Building in Los Angeles. The collection dates from the 1970s to the present. We often use pieces from our graphic/poster collection to create exhibits at the Archives. We also have a small collection of original fine art work, although it has not yet been catalogued. Actually, at the present time we are not really able to preserve artwork in the way we think it should be, so we prefer if you send us slides of your work but keep the original or donate it to an Archive that specializes in fine art. However, we will not turn away artwork if you prefer that it become part of our collection and we hope to eventually be able to preserve and store it appropriately.

Special Collections http://emmaschaefer.info/collections/special-collections/ Tue, 04 Dec 2018 01:49:48 +0000 http://lha.local/?page_id=267

Since 1979, the Lesbian Herstory Archives has collected the papers and records of individual lesbians as well as organizations. More than 400 collections comprise the Archives' Special Collections. Please visit the "new" special collections index, which is listed alphabetically as well as chronologically, and is searchable.

You are just as likely to find the collection of a secretary, teacher, or truck driver, as you are a well-known poet, writer, or activist. And, we urge all of our community members to begin their collection today.

While the contents of the collections vary widely, many contain personal journals or diaries plus other material the lesbian felt reflected her life. For instance, one lawyer’s collection contained many legal files, a large number from lesbian cases; others contain notes from a lover, valentine cards, photo albums, and so on. Organizational Special Collections are usually material given to us once an organization disbands. So, for example, we have a Special Collection from the New York Committee to Free Sharon Kowalski and from the Madison, WI Lesbian Center. Special Collections range in size from one to 60 boxes. We keep one box from every open access collection. Additional boxes are stored off site and are brought to the Archives when wanted for research.

Special Collections are catalogued on our database. In addition, a printed list of the collections accompanies a set of binders containing the accession sheets, which are organized by the year in which the collection was donated or, if is an ongoing collection, the year in which it began. Depending on the extent to which the collection has been processed and organized, either by us or by the donor, the accession sheets will contain descriptions of the contents that vary in their detail.

Organizational Files http://emmaschaefer.info/collections/organizational-files/ Tue, 04 Dec 2018 01:50:17 +0000 http://lha.local/?page_id=271

Affectionately known as the “org file”, these files, covering 1,500 organizations, are kept in alphabetical order and fill up three vertical five-drawer filing cabinets as well as several overflow boxes. In the org file we keep materials from/related to voluntary and not-for-profit groups in the LGBT community that include a focus on lesbian issues, as well as women’s /feminist groups which either include a lesbian focus or have known lesbian participation. Most of the groups are Lesbian and are from the United States, though there are other countries represented.

They range from small groups, like the Black Lesbian Study Group (NY) to community centers, such as the Lesbian Resource Center (Seattle, WA). Though we have a large number of NY groups we have files for groups from all over the country. These are files for the LGBT task forces of many national professional organizations, for religious, ethnic and culturally identified groups, and for college groups. Our earliest files date from the 60s and early 70s(e.g., D.O.B., The Women’s Firehouse, Salsa Soul) and continue to the present (D.I.T.C.H., NY, 2002). Some of the files have only one sheet of paper; others are large collections. Most large collections are from groups or organizations that sent us their materials when they disbanded. However, both ACT UP NY and Lesbian Avengers, NY, for example, have large collections because one of our coordinators was a member of both.

…many of our collections are catalogued in databases at our building. one of our plans for the future is to make those databases available online…

The org files contain flyers, minutes, posters, fundraising letters and other material produced by or about the group, including newspaper articles. All of the information pertaining to these files has been catalogued and can be searched on our computer.

Unpublished Papers

The unpublished papers collection is another unique part of the Archives. It includes 1,000 theses, college papers, speeches, dissertations, short stories, poetry and other works written by lesbians over the past thirty-five years. A rich source of research materials covering a vast array of topics, this collection houses prose and poetry, fiction and non-fiction and reflects those brilliant insights, theories, ideas and fantasies our young and old lesbian minds have conjured up over the years. Some material was written for submission for publication; other material was written for high school, college and graduate school courses, or for self-pleasure. When a researcher uses material from the Archives for their research we ask that they send us their finished paper(s) and these too will be found in this collection. Unpublished papers are kept in two five-drawer filing cabinets plus overflow boxes and are arranged alphabetically by the name of the paper, story or poem. These are also on our database and can be search by keywords in the title as well as by author.

Geographical Files http://emmaschaefer.info/collections/geographical-files/ Tue, 04 Dec 2018 01:50:27 +0000 http://lha.local/?page_id=273

Also known as “Lesbians in…”, the information in these files is very useful if you are planning a trip or if you just want to get a sense of another place. And, recently, an intern did a wonderful job of organizing these files so they are in really good shape. The files contain two sections. The first contains the International Geographic Files, with material from countries other than the U.S. They are arranged alphabetically by the name of the country and within that by cities or towns. The second part contains the U.S. Geographic Files, arranged alphabetically by state and within each state by city or town. Each file holds an assortment of material ranging from local “lesbian/gay maps” and guides, to flyers of events, listings of bars, newspaper clippings, or a local newsletter. These files were built up over the years with material from any number of lesbians who brought us an interesting article or paper or perhaps a handful of stuff from their home state or country or that they picked up while traveling. There’s a file for each of the states in the United States and current international files start with Albania and end with Zimbabwe.

Biographical Files http://emmaschaefer.info/collections/biographical-files/ Tue, 04 Dec 2018 01:50:37 +0000 http://lha.local/?page_id=275

These files are arranged alphabetically by the first name of the lesbian. As opposed to Special Collections, which contain material donated by individual lesbians, these files contain public materials we have found which contain information about well-known and not well-known lesbians. So, while we might file an article about Eleanor Roosevelt, Martina Navratilova, or Eva Le Galliene, we also create files for lesbians who have marriage or commitment ceremony announcements or obituaries in local papers, who give a reading or have an art exhibit.

As you may know, with very minor exceptions materials in our collections have been donated by members of our communities. This has enabled us to create an archive with an incomparable range of material representing diverse lesbian lives and cultures. We are truly pleased you are considering donating material to the Archives, adding to the depth and breadth of its collections.

Mabel Hampton working her way through some of the materials
Mabel Hampton working her way through some of the materials

There are two ways you can support the Archives with the donation of material. You can donate material for placement in our regular collections (books, videos, CDs, DVDs, t-shirts, magazines, journals, graphics, etc.) or you can donate your personal or organizational papers and memorabilia and we will create a Special Collection for you.

Each of these requires some preparation, if possible, which will make our work much easier. In the case of your own personal collection, it will also help to insure that your life or organization is represented in the way you see it, rather than with a structure we impose.

Regular Collections

Like many of the lesbians we know, various keepsakes representing lesbian life and experience may be filling up shelves, file cabinets, boxes, drawers, closets, the garage or basement in your home. At some point you may decide it’s time to make room for more. Rather than putting that material out in the street, please realize that it will be invaluable to generations of lesbians who will come after you.

If you have read our tour of the archives and the description of our collections, you know we preserve all types of materials. Whether it is a zine that was only published once, a mainstream TV program you taped, or an entire collection of mystery books by lesbian authors, we would like you to consider donating it to the Archives. However, in order to keep our work to a minimum, we ask you to follow a simple procedure.

Like most Archives, we have limited space. For our books and older (or rare) periodicals we keep one exact copy in the Archives and store one exact duplicate (or set) off site. Unless they are rare or one-of-a kind, we only keep one copy of t-shirts, videos, CDs, LPs, etc. So, if you have decided to give us any of these types of materials we ask that you contact us first and send us a list of the material you have. You can fax it (718-768-4553) or mail it (LHEF, Inc. 484 14th Street Brooklyn, New York 11215). Give us the titles, author and dates of books; the title, year, volume and numbers of the periodical issues; the descriptions of the words and graphics on T-shirts (unless they are one-of-a-kind), and identifying information about CDs, DVDs, videos, etc. When we have this information we can check it against our database. Then we’ll get back to you telling you which material does not duplicate something we already have and you can send it to us. We appreciate that this takes some time but we ask that you please do this, rather than simply mailing the material to us.

When you donate material for placement in our regular collections you do not have to fill out donor forms. However, if the material is meaningful to you in a specific way - for example, a T-shirt reminds you of a particular event or person - it would be great if you could describe that in a letter that accompanies the material. We include this type of information in our databases.

Special Collections

Creating Your Special Collection

As noted earlier, our Special Collections are made up of the personal papers of individual lesbians or the papers from LGBT organizations with known lesbian participation. In the case of organizations, a Special Collection is usually created after an organization no longer exists and sends us its papers. One can also be created when an individual who helped found an organization or worked in it for a long time sends us papers about that organization and asks that it be kept as a Special Collection rather than simply being integrated into our Organization Files.

While we have Special Collections from many “well-known” lesbians and from large organizations, we also have many collections from lesbians you have probably never heard of, lesbians who – like most of us –live their lives in relative anonymity and belong to or have created local, small organizations. We especially value the latter because our goal is to have Special Collections from as wide and diverse a group of lesbians and communities as possible. For the holdings of the Archives to reflect the complexities and richness of our varied communities, lives and internationalities, we need all your stories – ranging from women who have lived their lives as lesbians to transgendered women living as lesbians, to married women who remember the one affair they had, to lesbian sex workers, to lesbian mothers of lesbian daughters – and we need these stories in all the languages you speak. In that way our history will more accurately reflect the range of lives we have led rather than reducing us to a stereotype or to a few “famous” women.

We urge you to start creating your Special Collection today. Save your letters, emails, birthday cards, photographs of friends, lovers, and family, your unpublished poetry or prose, work related papers, papers indicating your participation in organizations you have belonged to, and so on. You might want to make a video, an audiotape or a CD about your life or community. If the Special Collection your are creating is from an organization you belonged to, it can include all types of organizational papers including minutes, leaflets, photos, and newspaper articles about it or articles of incorporation if relevant. Here are some pointers for the physical well being of your collection:

  • Store your papers and keepsakes in a clean, cool, dry, dark place. Dampness, heat, and overexposure to dust and sun encourage paper and electronic recordings to decay. Keep moldy documents away from everything else.
  • Unfold all papers so they lie flat. Creases tear easily as paper ages. Remove metal staples - they rust. Use plastic paper clips when possible and do not use tape. The adhesive on most clear and masking tapes is very acidic, and causes paper to yellow. Remove acidic tape from your precious documents before it is too late.
  • Don't keep photographs in those stickum photo albums; the stickum is acidic and will ruin your photos over time. Mylar or other archival plastic sleeves or acid free paper backing with the little corner mounts are best. Label the back of your photos in soft #1 pencil (pen seeps through eventually) with the dates, location, and names of the people in the picture.

And, here are some of the ways you can make your documents and other materials most accessible and understandable to the people who will use your collection:

  • If possible, include an outline or timeline of the major events in your life in either written or recorded form. Be as lengthy or brief as you like, then organize the collection using your outline.
  • Identify the people whose letters appear in your collection, making clear who wrote what, and arrange the letters in order by time and/or correspondent. You might want to add a description of your relationship to them and other information about them.
  • Arrange other writing, photographs, clippings and keepsakes similarly.
  • Use folders (acid-free folders are best) for your materials and give them headings, for e.g., “LETTERS, GLORIOUS R. DYKES, 1981-1989” or “PHOTOS, SOFTBALL TEAM, 1985.”
  • Clearly label your photographs, clippings and other items with names, dates and locations. Include notes explaining how the memorabilia, flyers and clippings relate to your life.

Donating Your Special Collection to the Archives

Although you can donate your Special Collection at the Archives at any point in your life. we suggest you to begin at an early age. But whenever you decide to send your material to the Archives you should, if possible, follow the suggestions above.

Send the material to our mailing address along with which ever of our Donor Forms apply to the type of material you are sending. It is essential that you include Donor Forms with your collection. They allow you to state how and under what conditions you will allow access to and use of the material in your collection. These are important decisions you should think about carefully. And, without them we must stringently restrict their use by researchers.

Once you send us your material and the donor forms, we will give your Special Collection a number and add it to our database along with any instructions you send regarding its use. We suggest that you keep a copy of the donor forms. You can add to your collection at anytime. Simply mail us the additional material and we will do the rest.

In addition, include a detailed bequest to the Lesbian Herstory Archives in your will. If you make such a bequest regarding your papers, photos, etc., it will be less likely that uncaring or hostile relatives will lose or destroy your papers. Ensure that your will is legally binding by consulting a lawyer.

Offering your collection to the Lesbian Herstory Archives is offering a reflection of yourself to your community. Lesbians and others who seek to know us by exploring your life are eager to read your words, know your thoughts, and view your images. Placing your collection in the Archives is a courageous and generous act. Thanks to you and others who have offered collections to the Archives, lesbian herstory will live as a life-giving force for generations to come. We thank you for your generosity, in memory of the voices we have lost.

About the Archives http://emmaschaefer.info/about-the-archives__trashed/ Tue, 18 Dec 2018 21:21:15 +0000 http://lha.local/?page_id=601

Statement of Purpose

The Lesbian Herstory Archives exists to gather and preserve records of Lesbian lives and activities so that future generations will have ready access to materials relevant to their lives. The process of gathering this material will uncover and collect our herstory denied to us previously by patriarchal historians in the interests of the culture which they serve. We will be able to analyze and reevaluate the Lesbian experience; we also hope the existence of the Archives will encourage Lesbians to record their experiences in order to formulate our living herstory.

We will collect and preserve any materials that are relevant to the lives and experiences of Lesbians: books, magazine, journals, news clippings (from establishment, Feminist or lesbian media), bibliographies, photos, historical information, tapes, films, diaries, oral histories, poetry and prose, biographies, autobiographies, notices of events, posters, graphics and other memorabilia.

Mourning the loss of Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz http://emmaschaefer.info/blog/mourning-the-loss-of-melanie-kaye-kantrowitz/ Wed, 19 Dec 2018 01:46:49 +0000 http://lha.local/?p=667

She was a tireless and lifelong worker against racism, anti-Semitism, economic injustice and homophobia.

We celebrate the life and join with her many friends in mourning the passing of Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz (1945-2018) essayist, poet and progressive lesbian activist. She was a tireless and lifelong worker against racism, anti-Semitism, economic injustice and homophobia. She served as an editor of the lesbian periodical "Sinister Wisdom" from 1983-1987 and in 1990 she became the founding director of Jews for Racial and Economic Justice. We extend our condolences to her partner Leslie Cagan and to all of her loved ones.

Her works include: We Speak in Code: Poems and Other Writings (1980, Motheroot Publications); The Tribe of Dina: A Jewish Women’s Anthology (1989, Beacon Press; editor, with Irena Klepfisz); My Jewish Face, and Other Stories (1990, Aunt Lute Books); The Issue is Power: Essays on Women, Jews, Violence and Resistance (1995, Aunt Lute Books)
The Colors of Jews: Racial Politics and Radical Diasporism (2007, Indiana University Press). She also contributed to anthologies, including:
Lesbian Poetry: An Anthology (1981); Fight Back: Feminist Resistance to Male Violence (1981); Nice Jewish Girls: A Lesbian Anthology (1984)

Internships

The Archives’ structure/process combines individual autonomy with group goals and consensus decision-making.

Time Commitment

Although there is no limit to how long a woman may intern, we ask for a commitment of at least l0 hours per week for no less than eight weeks (or more hours per week for a shorter period of time).

Skills

Interns should have a personal interest in and commitment to the Archives’ mission. Ease in working with a diverse public is an asset. No specific coursework or academic background is required. An interest in Lesbian Studies, Women’s Studies, and/or Lesbian/Gay issues is a strength, as is exposure to women’s communities and experience in working in a group environment with consensus.
